Ilyushin IL-4 (1942-1945)

Vast experience gained in production of aircraft made it possible to start manufacture of the IL-4 aircraft under war conditions within the extremely short period of time — five months. 919 aircraftt of this type were tent to regular units of the Long- Range and Naval Air Forces. The all-metal monoplane featured a good range of flight for this type of aircraft, which allowed to use it during the war in the most decisive combats such as the bombing of Berlin and the battle at the Kursk Arch. The aircraft was successfully used in the Naval Air Force as torpedo-carrier and mine-laying aircraft. For the first time in our practice use was made of self-sealing fuel tanks and heat-treated parts made of high-strength steels. The Plant has mastered the fabrication processes of a wide range of new materials. |
