The Museum of " History of Communication Means of the Irkutsk region (Museum of Communication) was founded in November 4th, 1977, for the 40th anniversary of the regional communication head quarters and at that time it occupied a room of 20 square metres in the building of the city telegraph station in Bogdanov str, 8.
The Company's stuffers took an active part in collecting I he documents and exhibits for the museum. At each Branch a special commission was organized. The said commissions comprised senior executives, veterans and young specialists.
Since 1985 the exhibition area has been enlarged up to 110 sq. metres. After completion of the restauration works of I he historical building once belonged to a well-known merchant and patron of arts Mr. V. Basnin, who was the mayor of Irkutsk in 1850-1854, the Museum obtained a good opportunity to house its exposition in this building and continuing the traditions, laid by Mr. V.Basnin in the last century. Today the Museum of Communication is a scientific, edu-calioanal, creative, and cultural centre. Its halls with an area of I60 m2 present the expositions devoted to the history of Siberian mail, telegraph and telephone communication, radio communication, broadcasting and television.
There is an exposition "Modern means of communication" providing an access to Internet, also it houses the "Malaya Academia" school. The funds of museum contain more than 3.000 items.
The museum is a member of the Scientific and Methodical Council of departmental museums functioning under the Irkutsk Rectors Board. |
